Engineering with curiosity: Felix’s Path to Femto

We’re excited to welcome Felix Rathmann to our team in Germany. With a background in mechanical engineering and a passion for FEM, Felix brings both technical expertise and a curious mindset that fits perfectly with Femto’s approach to solving complex engineering challenges.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background as an engineer?

Even in school, I knew I wanted to study mechanical engineering, so I pursued my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Münster University of Applied Sciences. During my Bachelor’s studies, FEM sparked my interest, leading me to write my thesis in that field. In my Master’s program, specializing in Computational Engineering, I was able to further deepen my knowledge in various areas of mechanical engineering as well as FEM. After working in condition monitoring, I was offered the opportunity to join Femto as a project engineer, which I gladly accepted.

What sparked your interest in engineering, and what keeps you motivated in this field today?

My general interest in technology since childhood, and the constant question of “how do things work?”, has been a driving force. During my studies, this interest evolved into a focus on optimizing components. FEM offers the ideal opportunity to identify and address weaknesses early in the design process. Working on diverse projects across various industries makes this role at Femto particularly interesting.

What kind of projects or challenges give you the most energy, and why?

The complex projects that require a lot of thought to find the solution. The deeper you can dive into a project or problem, the better. I think that’s how you learn the most.

What made you choose Femto, and what would you like to achieve in your first year with us?

Since I was already at Femto in Münster for my master’s thesis in 2024, I was able to gain insights into the diverse work there. When the opportunity arose to return for a permanent position, I didn’t have to think twice. The team in Münster and Delft gave me a fantastic welcome and made my start at Femto very pleasant. Despite my relatively short time at Femto, I’m already fully involved in project work. It’s wonderful to receive this trust, and I want to repay it with good performance. To that end, I want to gather as much knowledge as possible from the various projects and apply it myself. The goal is clearly to process my own projects in the shortest possible time and present the best possible result to the customer.
