From Interns to Engineers: Reflecting on a CAE Internship at Femto Engineering

What is it like to complete an engineering internship at a CAE consultancy? At Femto Engineering, interns don't just observe, they contribute to real customer projects in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and system simulation, working alongside experienced simulation engineers from day one.

Earlier this year, we introduced our interns Deyan and Casper as they started their internship journey at Femto. Over the past few months, they have worked on challenging engineering projects, expanded their technical knowledge, and discovered that becoming a successful engineer involves much more than mastering simulation software alone.

Casper looks back on his internship with pride and appreciation.

“I learned a great deal from the expertise of my colleagues, who were always willing to share their knowledge. Although everyone was focused on meeting deadlines, there was always time for a joke and a pleasant working atmosphere.”

During his internship, Casper investigated the use of 1D simulation, CFD, and Reduced Order Models (ROMs) to better understand coolant distribution in evaporator cooling channels. The project demonstrated how simulation-driven engineering can accelerate product development while providing valuable design insights.

One of the biggest challenges was mastering several advanced engineering software packages while keeping the project on schedule.

“The most valuable skill I gained was learning how to create a Reduced Order Model (ROM) that can generate fast and accurate predictions. I found this topic particularly interesting and hope to continue working with it in the future.”

His advice for future interns is simple: “Take advantage of the expertise of your colleagues. Everyone at Femto is enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge. Asking questions and learning from the people around you will help you get the most out of your internship.”

When Deyan joined Femto Engineering, he was eager to deepen his knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and simulation engineering. Looking back, one lesson stood out more than he expected.

“A lot of my internship ended up revolving around learning and improving my communication. For the first time, I worked closely with a non-engineering stakeholder, which meant I had to explain technical concepts in a completely different way. Throughout my internship, this became a common theme in the reports I wrote and the presentations I gave.”

Besides strengthening his communication skills, Deyan significantly expanded his knowledge of CFD simulation, gaining practical experience that complements his academic background.

“The most interesting problem I worked on was regulating temperature with a PID controller. It had been a while since I last tuned one, and I really enjoyed setting it up and refining it.”

For Deyan, presenting technical simulation results to a non-technical audience became one of the most valuable skills he developed during his internship.

His advice for future interns? Play ping pong during the lunch break. It’s the best way to boost morale and stay fresh for the last few hours of the workday.

Thank You, Deyan and Casper

We would like to thank both Deyan and Casper for their enthusiasm, dedication, and valuable contributions during their internships. Their curiosity, fresh perspectives, and willingness to learn have made them a great addition to our team. We wish Deyan every success in the next step of his engineering career and look forward to seeing where his passion for simulation engineering takes him.

We’re especially excited that Casper’s journey with Femto doesn’t end here.  Starting in July 2026, Casper will officially join Femto Engineering as an FEM Engineer. In this role, he will continue working on advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) projects, helping customers solve complex engineering challenges through simulation.

His transition from intern to engineer reflects Femto’s commitment to developing young engineering talent and investing in the next generation of simulation specialists.

We are delighted to welcome Casper to the team and look forward to seeing his career continue to grow at Femto.

Launch Your Engineering Career in Simulation
