    In engineering practice, thorough analysis is usually reserved for major components with clearly identifiable risks. Other components are usually analysed in the final stage of the product development. In such traditional ‘build-test-fail’ cycles, a lot of money, time and effort is spent modifying designs, changing drawings and updating documentation.

    The time and cost needed to correct problems increases enormously with each successive step of the product development cycle: conceptual design, detailed design, prototyping, testing and production. Moving product analysis to the fore, however, compresses the product development cycle, because it changes the moment at which errors are found and the design is refined.
